How We Transformed Ice Cream Freezers with Cloud IoT Solutions

The Project
We collaborated with a global food industry leader to develop a self-checkout solution for their ice cream freezers in supermarkets. Each freezer had 15 baskets in a 5×3 grid, filled with various ice cream flavors. The solution featured a custom-built tablet running on a lightweight Debian-based OS with a Svelte app, integrated with AWS IoT platform that provides a quick and seamless customer experience at the point of sale. The main goal was to simplify the checkout process while providing real-time insights for better strategic decisions.

Deploying the software across thousands of devices in regions like South America presented several challenges:

The Solution
To address these challenges, we developed a robust multi-layered solution:

Weight sensors identified ice cream products by their weight, automating the checkout process when the freezer door closed.

Leveraging AWS, we enabled seamless remote software management, data capture and insights, bug fixes, and real-time monitoring.
Telemetry Data Transfer:
Using MQTT, we ensured the light and efficient transfer of telemetry data in networks with limited bandwidth for real-time insights.

Built apps on top of data stored in AWS, which allowed the management to gather valuable insights and identify opportunities, enabling them to make more informed decisions.
